Malawi Foundational Learning Program for Results

I’m excited to have co-led the preparation of the Malawi Foundational Learning Program for Results (MFLP), the second-ever largest-ever Program for Results (PforR) in Malawi and the first in the education sector. PforR is a big step forward for Malawi’s education sector, supporting the transition away from fragmented service delivery and ensuring that funds are channeled through mainstream Government systems. PforR’s results-based financing means that for the first time, the entire investment will be released according to the achievement of key results to increase access to pre-primary education and improve learning environments and teaching skills in lower primary.

Financed by the Global Partnership for Education as well as the Government of Malawi, MFLP supports a number of new reforms to support improved foundational learning, including the introduction of new preparatory ‘p-class’ pre-primary education for five-year-olds; as well as reforms to teacher continuous professional development, improved distribution of teachers between schools, and improved provision of remedial learning.
